You can have the best products or services in the world, but if nobody knows about them, it’s a moot point. That’s where marketing management comes into the picture. This discipline focuses on raising customer awareness. Marketing is geared towards driving interest and ultimately purchases. To do this, marketers must present products and the solutions they offer to browsers. A sound marketing strategy relies on effective communication. The long-term viability of a company’s marketing campaign is grounded in integrity, credibility, and quality. Today, we introduce the marketing funnel and explain why it is the most effective management tool for driving people from viewers to buyers. The premier providers of digital marketing services never stray too far from established marketing doctrine. The sales funnel really works.
TOFU
Many marketing novices mistakenly think the goal of the Top of the Funnel (TOFU) is to make a sale. It’s not – it’s actually to be seen. This represents the ‘Click’ phase of operations. There are many different ways to go about this, notably SEO on Google, social media advertisements (TikTok, X, Facebook, Instagram, Medium, etc.), and influencer partnerships. Each of these platforms offers a unique way to reach customers on their own turf. Marketers have a responsibility to reach out to potential customers wherever they congregate online. Here’s the hook: marketers are introducing a solution to a problem the customer may not even have known existed. They are creating demand using impressions and click-through rates as their key metrics. And remember that the goal is to reach a broad audience and be seen.
MOFU
Once visibility is achieved, the next step is to build the connection. As soon as you have their attention, you must earn their time. The next phase is the middle of the funnel, known as MOFU. Now, the person browsing the marketing message (the viewer) becomes a lead. A lead is someone who shows interest in whatever is being promoted. It’s almost as if the individual is window shopping. At this point, it’s all about content marketing strategy. There are many ways to achieve the desired objectives, notably, webinars, newsletters, blog posts, and updates on social feeds. It’s about creating genuine value without forcing a hard sell.
EMOTIONAL SHIFT
The next stage is the emotional pivot stage of the funnel. This is where desire is sold through psychology. Recall that in the second stage of the funnel, the solution was presented. Now it’s time to make the lead want this specific solution. Credibility needs to be established at this juncture. This is done through testimonials, case studies, and assessments. It’s all about building credibility. This is the most challenging aspect of marketing management. Integrity is sacrosanct. This is the movement phase of the sales funnel. Interested viewers were led through the process and became leads. Those leads are still interested and, through various psychological elements, persuaded to desire the product. This is an inflection point in the sales funnel – it represents a shift from ‘I’m curious about this’ to ‘I really need this.’
BOFU
Now it’s time for the final conversion. This is where the rubber hits the road, and the purchase is made. At the bottom of the funnel – BOFU – a customer is born. The transition from stage 3 to 4 should be as seamless as possible. It should be accompanied by a clear call to action (CTA). These are actionable words that facilitate purchases. For example, Buy Now, Add to Cart, Get it, etc. The checkout process should not complicate the BOFU stage. To sweeten a deal, marketing experts routinely add a sense of urgency or exclusivity to the transaction. For example, you may see limited time offers, buy one get one free, or download now and enjoy free benefits. This is the final nudge over the finish line.
How do we know that the traditional sales funnel still works? The proof of the pudding is in the testing. We see it working every day. Marketing experts understand that you can never take a customer for granted. While brand loyalty takes time to develop, it’s easy to break if the brand fails to meet customer expectations. That’s why every customer should be treated with kid gloves, like royalty. There is no linear path to guaranteed returns. Companies cannot take their eyes off the prize. They need to remain hyper vigilant, competitive, customer-centric, and committed to delivering quality affordably. Throughout this process, effective communication must be maintained. It’s not only about staying in the public eye; it’s about presenting a competitive solution to an engineered problem.
